hello!

formal      안녕하십니까 -annyeonghasibnikka

polite        안녕하세요 - annyeonghaseyo

informal    안녕 - annyeong

1.안녕하십니까 -annyeonghasibnikka

From 안녕하다 ( annyeonghada, “to be well/peaceful”). Use this greeting when you want to show the greatest level of sincerity or respect possible.

As a formal greeting, this phrase is not often used among friends and relatives on a day-to-day basis. An occasion that might warrant this greeting would be the arrival of an important or highly esteemed guest. You could also use it with loved ones you have not seen in a while to express greater emotion upon greeting them.

안녕하십니까 -annyeonghasibnikka?

  • How are you?

  • Hello

  • Good morning

  • Good afternoon

  • Good evening

2.“안녕하세요?” (annyeonghaseyo)

“안녕하세요?” (annyeonghaseyo) is used interchangeably to say “Hi, hello, good morning/afternoon/evening”.

This is the most commonly used greeting, and can be said with almost everyone, particularly to people you would like to show some respect to. You can use annyeong haseyo with both friends--particularly older ones -- and elders. It is not the most formal way of greeting someone, but it is still considered to be a polite way to say “hello,” which makes it fitting for most if not all everyday greetings.

This greeting roughly means “please be well” or “please be peaceful.” The only difference between it and "annyoung" is that this version is more polite.

3. 안녕 - annyeong

안녕 - annyeong : This is the most casual way of saying "hey" or "hi." in Hangul. This greeting means something along the lines of “be well” or “be peaceful.

Use this greeting with friends and relatives who are your age or younger. It is considered a very casual, informal way of greeting someone, so you can only use it with people you are on familiar terms with. You should also avoid saying it to a stranger.

Avoid using this expression with people who are in a position of authority over you, such as an instructor, supervisor, or elder. You should also avoid saying it to a stranger.

good bye!

When you are saying goodbye to a person, you would say “안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo)” or “안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo)”in Korean.

안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) : stay in peace.

Formal goodbye:

when someone leaves   안녕히 가세요 - annyeonghi gaseyo

when you leave              안녕히 계세요 - annyeonghi gyeseyo

if you are talking to friends etc… :

go well                              잘가(요) - jalga

bye                                     안녕 - annyeong

see you next time            다음에 봐 - daeume bwa

let's see next time            다음에 보자 - daeume boja

  • Another common way of saying ‘goodbye’ in Korea is to simply say 가세요 (gaseyo). Often older people use this word when saying ‘goodbye’ to younger people. It is a polite way of saying ‘go’.

  • You can say ‘goodbye’ by using the phrase 잘 가요 (jal gayo), which literally means ‘go well’. This expression can only be used when the other person is leaving.

  • If you are leaving, then a frequently used expression is 나 먼저 가 (na meonjeo ga) which means "I will go first". It can be used with close friends.

  • 다음에 봐 (daeume bwa) It is the most common way to say goodbye! This phrase means “see you next time”. Only use this with friends since this is very informal.

  • 내일 봐 (naeil bwa) "see you tomorrow". if you are speaking to somebody older than you, then you should include the ‘yo’ at the end. If they are significantly older than you, then you may want to change 봐 to 보세요 ‘boseyo’ to make it more formal
